In an unexpected turn of events, pop sensation Shawn Mendes, 26, was spotted attending the Friday (Jummah) prayers at New York University (NYU) alongside fellow Canadian artist Mustafa the Poet, 28.
Mustafa Ahmed, known professionally as Mustafa the Poet, is a singer, songwriter, and poet hailing from Toronto. He gained recognition for his poignant poetry and has since transitioned into music, releasing his debut album “Dunya.”
As soon as photos and videos started surfacing online, fans on Twitter/X couldn’t contain their excitement—and confusion. Mendes, best known for his boy-next-door charm and hit songs like Stitches and There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back, took a break from the spotlight to partake in what some fans are calling “the most wholesome side quest of 2025.”
Mendes was seen attending the weekly Islamic congregational prayer with Mustafa Ahmedwho is known for his deeply introspective music and activism.
Mustafa, who embraced Islam at the age of 15 after being introduced to the faith by his parents at a young age, has been open about his spiritual journey.
Given their friendship, fans are speculating that Mendes may have simply been there to support Mustafa—a touching and heartfelt gesture that has won over even more admirers.
According to people who were present, Mendes and Mustafa were incredibly gracious, taking the time to greet attendees, chat with students, and even snap selfies after the prayer.
Witnesses also noted that Mendes stood in line and prayed alongside everyone else, showing deep respect for the ritual.
The internet absolutely lost it over Mendes’ surprise mosque visit, with memes, jokes, and heartfelt reactions flooding social media. Many fans dubbed him “Brother Shawn”, jokingly welcoming him into the Muslim community.
They even gave him a ‘Muslim name.’
