Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given in-principle approval for a province-wide electric bus project that will see 1,500 buses deployed across multiple cities.

The decision came during a high-level meeting of the provincial transport department chaired by the chief minister.

In the first phase, 380 electric buses will be introduced in Lahore and Gujranwala. The procurement process for these buses has been ordered to begin immediately, with a deadline set for June.

Additional cities such as Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Rahim Yar Khan, and Dera Ghazi Khan will be included in later stages of the project.

Maryam Nawaz also directed officials to present route plans for Faisalabad and Gujranwala, and demanded progress on the planning of Lahore’s Yellow Line within 15 days.

A new transport command and control centre has also been approved for Lahore, alongside the establishment of charging stations for the electric fleet.

The chief minister emphasised that modern public transport is the right of every citizen, not just those in Lahore, expressing her wish for “world-class bus systems in every major city of Punjab.”
