BJP likely to get new party president

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to get a new national party president by March 15, said multiple TV reports on Thursday.

However, there is no confirmation about the key choices or frontrunners for the post.

The tenure of party president JP Nadda came to an end in June 2024.

Earlier, the BJP had reportedly aimed to appoint a new national president by December 2024.

Currently, JP Nadda is the leader of the House in Rajya Sabha and holds the Health, Chemicals and Fertilizers portfolio in the Modi government.

Nadda became the BJP’s working president in 2019. In January 2020, he was promoted as full-time president.

In 2023, ahead of Lok Sabha Elections in May 2024, his three-year tenure was extended until June 2024.

In June 2024, some reports claimed that BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde was the front-runner for the post.

However, Tawde, a former minister in the Maharashtra government and also one of the most influential general secretaries in the BJP, was embroiled in row over ‘cash-for-votes’ on the eve of high-stakes assembly elections in Maharashtra.

Last month, party MLA and former Maharashtra minister Ravindra Chavan was appointed as the working president of the BJP’s state unit.

Chavan (54) is a four-term MLA from Dombivali in Thane district. He was not inducted as a minister in the new BJP-led Mahayuti government.

It was speculated that he might replace Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who has taken charge as the revenue minister, as the state BJP president.
